The Political Comment
The US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice described the war between Hezbollah in Lebanon and Israel as part of “birth pangs of a new Middle East”. She dismissed the persistent calls for an immediate ceasefire describing it as a “false promise if the root causes of the conflict are not addressed. She added: “An immediate cease-fire without political conditions does not make sense.” The statements made by Bush and Bolton among other American officials, in addition to European and Arab officials blamed Hezbollah for starting the war and justified of “Israel” the right to retaliate. It was even sensed that the statements made by American officials in particular were pushing the “Israelis” towards waging war on Hezbollah and Lebanon.

The Political Comment
In a lightening operation against the Israeli army, Hezbollah succeeded this morning (Wednesday) in capturing two Israeli soldiers. A few days earlier, the head of the Palestinian Authority, Ismael Haniya had proposed a five-point initiative that included a ceasefire and negotiations over the issue of the captured Israeli soldier. This was followed by statements made by Khaled Masha’al during a press conference in Damascus in which he stressed that the Israeli soldier would not be released except with a prisoner exchange. These developments came in the wake of the bloody week notably witnessed in Gaza, which represented the Jews’ response to operation “Dissipated Illusion” that resulted in the capturing of the Israeli soldier. The initiative of Ismael Haniya had come after the savage murder and the destruction of the infrastructure in the Gaza strip and after the aforementioned operation.

Political Comment
The end of the visit to Iraq by the Arab League Secretary General coincided with the Independent Electoral High Commission announcing success in the referendum on the Iraqi draft constitution by 78.59% after ten days of delay. Amr Moussa had put forth the initiative of the Arab League aimed at organising a conference on Iraqi national reconciliation to be held in Cairo by mid-November. The broad themes of the Arab League’s initiative were specified by two issues: 1- The League’s support for building a new Iraq. 2- Rallying all the Iraqi factions under a framework of dialogue and a national Iraqi reconciliation. Amr Moussa had promised to open a bureau for the Arab League in Baghdad and justified the absence of the League’s role by stating that Iraq had been proceeding through a dark tunnel “with no light at the end of it in sight. But now, we look forward to the future and to building a new Iraq which will be an example to follow.” Moussa secured the consent to the Arab League’s initiative from most of the political spectrums in Iraq including al-Sistani and the Association of Muslim Scholars.

The Political Comment
In a remarkable speech delivered on Thursday 6th October 2005 before the crowd gathered at the National Endowment for Democracy to mark the anniversary of the 11th September 2001 attacks, George Bush said that “the terrorists regard Iraq as the central front in their war against humanity. And we must recognize Iraq as the central front in our war on terror.” He described his enemies as being part of a radical Islamic movement with “a clear and focused ideology”. He added: “The militants believe that controlling one country will rally the Muslim masses, enabling them to overthrow all moderate governments in the region, and establish a radical Islamic empire that spans from Spain to Indonesia.” George Bush was unequivocal in his speech when he said that “the murderous ideology of the Islamic radicals is the great challenge of our new century.” He added :“Yet, in many ways, this fight resembles the struggle against communism in the last century.”

Political Comment
The Middle East region is experiencing a critical period and a crucial round in the struggle between the states of Kufr, headed by America today, and the Muslims of the region. Despite the gravity of the period and the seriousness of its fallout if America were to succeed in what she is planning and in what she wants for the region, many Muslims are yet to perceive that the ongoing struggle between the Muslims on the one hand and the state of Kufr, headed by America, on the other hand, is a vital struggle whose outcome will determine simultaneously the fate of the Islamic Ummah and the destiny of the Western hegemony over the region.
