On 27th June 2002, the American Secretary of State paid a visit to the region during which he met the parties involved in the peace process. This was the first visit of an American official of this calibre since the new American administration took office last February.

Although the new American administration claimed since it came to the White House that it had no intention of getting involved in the issue of the Middle East and that it would consider the Middle East region as one, without specifically focusing on one single issue. However, the American administration sent William Burns to the Middle East as a special envoy, and then the director of the CIA, George Tenet, in order to explore the security developments in the wake of the operations that shook the depths of the Israeli entity.

In a fresh move by the Saudi crown prince Abdullah, in the wake of his initiative adopted by the Arab Summit in Beirut, save for some minor amendments, the Saudi prince Abdullah presented the American President with an eight point programme. Its details of were revealed during their talks at the American President’s ranch in Texas last Wednesday.

Political Comment

The Palestinian Authority is working towards expanding the platform of political participation to include all the spectra of the Palestinian mainstream, by luring the Palestinian opposition movements and factions to take part in a future Palestinian government. The role of this future government will be to represent all the spectra of the Palestinian mainstream in the signing of the final status agreements pertaining to the Palestinian issue.

The Political Comment

The 25th regular Arab Summit will be held in Amman on 27th March 2001. It has been announced that it will deal with reviving the peace process and providing financial aid to the Palestinians in the shape of a 40 million-dollar non-repayable grant. It has also been announced that the summit will review what is referred to as the economic cooperation, which will achieve in the long term and in a gradual manner an economic integration and coalition, thus enabling the Arab countries to convoy the international economic developments.

The Political Comment

The events of the intifada and its ramifications over the progress of the peace process and the domestic "Israeli" situation reveal that "Israel" must inevitably face the reality which the American interests in the region dictate, namely the ending of the Arab-Israeli struggle by establishing a state for the Palestinians and by compelling "Israel" to comply by the international law and to implement the United Nations resolutions, especially resolutions 242 and 338.
